In the late 1960’s NASA
developed a material found to have unique properties
that proved to be very useful in reducing pressure
points while sleeping.
Memory foam is the latest
generation product born from this NASA research.
Memory foam is sensitive to both the body’s
weight and temperature. As a result of this pressure
points on the body are virtually eliminated,
blood circulation is not impeded and the skin
is able to breath. This allows the body to regenerate
itself and be well rested.
Visco elastic memory foam was designed by NASA for
use in the space shuttles to help ease the strain
that all the astronauts had to deal with at take
off. As a space shuttle is being blasted off from
earth, g-forces are applied to the astronauts body,
putting pressure and strain over every inch of their
muscles. Over 20 years ago, scientists working for
NASA developed foam that helped absorb and equalize
the pressure incurred by lifting off earth. With the
NASA memory foam, those who flew in the shuttles
would do so in relative ease and comfort. Using this
new invention revolutionized comfort for both the
space program and soon for the average consumer as
well. Not too long after NASA memory foam was used
in the space shuttle, scientists developed the foam
for public consumer use.

The thought of sleeping on a foam mattress may
be of some concern to you.
Memory foam mattresses come with an outer cover
which dissipates undue body heat and moisture
from your skin by allowing it to breathe comfortably.
This helps prevent discomfort and in particular
bedsores.
A very common concern is about allergies. We
all know that traditional mattresses are havens
for dust mites, pollen, bacteria and dead skin.
Memory foam mattresses are hypoallergenic, therefore,
Memory Foam mattresses are a great choice not
just for those with back or joint pain, but even
for people who suffer from allergies and asthma.
A sagging or distorted mattress often promotes
an unnatural spine alignment. To compensate, your
muscles, generally in the lower back area, will
tense up trying to restore a more natural positioning
of the spine. It is this muscle tension that builds
over the sleep period, and produces that morning
discomfort and pain in the lower back area.
An overly firm mattress creates uncomfortable
pressure points in your shoulders and hips. This
in turn, causes you to toss and turn restlessly
throughout the night. In the morning you often
wake up feeling sore and tired.
Whether you sleep on your side, stomach or back,
a proper mattress should conform to the shape
of your body, particularly around the shoulders,
hips and knees and your weight needs to be evenly
distributed so that your spine remains in a neutral
and natural position. It should also have a firm
enough core to properly support your weight and
stop you from sagging into the mattress.
Many users of memory foam, report less tossing
and turning during sleep, as well as a deeper,
more restful sleep than on any other sleeping
surface.
